On 19 October 1954, the Austrians Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jöchler, accompanied by the Nepalese Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama, reached the summit of Cho Oyu (8,188 m) for the first time, situated between Nepal and Tibet, via the north-west ridge and without supplementary oxygen. Until Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler’s ascent of Everest in 1978, it remained the highest peak conquered without artificial respiration.
